ARTWORK DETAILS

Jensen Smidt
Prankster's Underworld Installation
Graffiti themed installation comprising a canvas, skateboard, clay rats and urban rubbish elements with soundtrack of graffiti artists at work.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Fundamentally intertwined with negative connotations of vandalism, graffiti and KEEP AWAY: "Prankster’s Underworld” depicts grungy graffiti tags brashly emblazoned on the reverse side of an already completed canvas; referencing the art form’s nature of concealment and irreverent placement together with 'barbed wire'. The skateboard represents the rebellious ones who passionately pursue their graffiti art and as a means for a quick getaway when warranted. The audience is left to ponder whether the rats are just another grimy element or are they symbolic of vandals/graffiti artists living and creating in the netherworld? Stay, listen and appreciate the devious, underhanded prankster’s underworld.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Reverse side of painted canvas and skateboard emblazoned with graffiti inspired artwork with two clay formed rats. Assembled together to create a representation of a cityscape alleyway with an accompanying ambient soundtrack to immerse the audience in the moment.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jensen Smidt

When I was younger, I remember admiring graffiti artworks on inner-city laneway walls. I somehow felt an affinity with the injection of vitality and life the artform brought to an otherwise bland or neglected part of cityscape architecture. Since then, I have followed with great interest, the rise in popularity and notoriety of the distinct urban street-art style. At the moment, I am experimenting with and exploring possibilities of transferring my designs to streetwear fashion. Two of my more recent artworks have been acquired by rap superstar ‘The Kid Laroi’ and celebrity YouTuber Logan Paul. You can find me @thejensendean.
