ARTIST STATEMENT

Black and white. Light and dark. Growth and decay. Contrasting ideas which rely on one another to survive. Without growth there is no decay and without decay no growth. The obscurity or grey area between these ‘black and white’ concepts as they interact with one another creates a conundrum of beauty. ‘Between two extremes’ illustrates that just as growth symbolizes beauty and new beginnings it shares darker roots, and decay, often deemed as darkness can show vulnerability and elegance. Natural beauty is found all around yet we neglect our primal instincts to appreciate, interpret and connect with our natural environment.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I utilised the string-pull painting method to create my work to convey the intended message of growth and decay within our natural environment. This method required soaking various lengths of string in both black and white, watered-down acrylic paint. The soaked lengths of string were placed onto card in various shapes, patterns, and forms. The string was then slowly removed from the card, leaving behind an array of individual designs that were reworked into with fine posca pen, fine-line pens and OHT sheets to portray my personal interpretations. A video overlay was also projected to further portray the message.
