ARTIST STATEMENT
'A Walk Along Victoria Street' depicts three buildings which one would encounter if walking down Victoria Street - a busy street in Mackay. Following a devastating cyclone in 1918, the township of Mackay was rebuilt and more modern architecture replaced many of the the lost buildings. Mackay has a reputation as an Art Deco town and much of its architecture still bears the elegant features of another era. 'A Walk Along Victoria Street' highlights the beauty of Mackay's architecture and its interesting history.
ARTWORK PROCESS
For my process, I began each artwork with a yellow ochre background which constituted the buildings and contrasted against the bright blue skies. The colours are vivid and glowing to capture the tropical weather here in Mackay. I applied layers of gouache to add depth and create a lively atmosphere to embody the mood of Mackay and these precious architectural structures which serve the community.
