ARTIST STATEMENT
Through personal and contemporary contexts Mother portrays the prevalent societal issue of sexism against women and female subjugation and employs my personal, despite common, experiences. Mother explores the negative emotions and experiences associated with experiencing gender-based discrimination by composing elements that aren’t usually seen together in one homogenous artwork. The work demonstrates how female subjugation is embedded into an extensively wide range of aspects in our society. To combat this, the artwork aims to tell a story and validate women’s collective experiences.
ARTWORK PROCESS
To create the oil on canvas artwork, I employed hyper-realism painting techniques to replicate the displaced emotional effect of gender-based discrimination. I approached the process of the artwork with a loose plan that was continuously evolving. However regardless of the plan, I had a known assortment of elements that I wanted to incorporate and ended up simply completing element by element until I felt the work was complete.
