Family Photograph Installation
Perspex Box and Framed Photograph

ARTIST STATEMENT

The death of a parent is devastating, but what happens when you had never met them? My work focuses on my personal context of the death of my father Brian Cole, my experience of knowing him after death and perceiving who he might have been. By manipulating a sense of absence, 'Family Photograph' utilises space in the centre of the case to show the emptiness of my memories, all I have is a name that obscures the view. The self-portrait of myself with the box is a metaphorical family photo.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The perspex box was created by selecting an appropriate font in MicrosoftWord for the name of the artist's bereaved father. The design was then created onto a translucent sticker to fit the perspex and mounted. The self-portrait of artist with 'father' (perspex box) was then taken and lightly edited before printing and framing.
