'Fragmented Recollections' Painting
Fragments of two watercolour portrait paintings mounted back-to-back and suspended on fishing line threads within a shadow-box frame.

ARTIST STATEMENT

'Fragmented Recollections' is a contemporary shadow-box installation that explores how the destruction of memory through time influences our perception of others. When we spend a significant amount of time away from someone, our memory of them begins to erode. Through this two-sided rotational dual presentation, the work aims to spark a sense of intrigue within the viewer, making them contemplate the many people that they have crossed paths with, but no longer remember clearly. The two sides of the boy’s face showcases two slightly different expressions to highlight this disorientation. The fragmentation of the piece was influential in communicating the fracturing of identity.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The work began with the use of watercolour paint to create two paintings of the same boy with slightly deviating features, accentuating the warping and disorientation of memory when viewing the piece. The two images were then carefully sliced up to match with mirroring side of the alternate portrait. In order to 'float' these fragmented pieces so that they could freely rotate within the chosen recycled hand-built shadow-box frame, holes were drilled in the top and bottom timber edges. Fishing line was attached to create vertically suspended threads to support the floating fragments, attached with craft glue and double-sided tape.
