ARTIST STATEMENT
‘Unravelled’ responds to my personal experience with rapid change in emotions while undergoing the pressure of high school. Feeling excited at the beginning of the day and going home drained and exasperated due to the impending workload. The unpredictability of our emotions means we are constantly in a state of flux, vulnerable of what the future may bring. Our erratic emotions are reflected in the natural world, constantly changing, and growing into the unknown. I challenge this concept using alternate materials and organic design. The materials flow, grow, morph, change similar to the environment and emotions we experience every day.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Informed by Alexander McQueen, I explored emotional flux through naturalism, contrasting shapes and colour. The base of the dress is made using hand-dyed calico and tulle to create structure and movement. I manipulated paper and created patterns with ink, gladwrap and riso printing .Contrasting intricate floral shapes added as symbols of growth. Printed plastic sheets melted into organic, unpredictable 3D shapes. The dress was installed into the natural environment to create connection between the spiralling, uncontrollable growth of the forest and the unravelling, uncontrolled silhouette of the dress. The organic structures blend with the forest, the bright colour a juxtaposition.
