Assembly Painting
A sculptural work, made from components of a deconstructed abstract painting.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Assembly is an abstract painting in three-dimensions. Two wooden canvas stretchers have been hinged to create a freestanding concertina frame. A large-scale abstract painting has been crafted then torn into four pieces. The canvas fragments are then carefully rearranged, draped, and tailored back onto the empty frame. Traditional display conventions are challenged from a solid stretched painting that is to be viewed front-on, static on a gallery wall, into a structure that cannot be ignored. My painting now stands by itself within a space and my audience must walk around the work to observe its formal qualities and physicality.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Traditional canvas pieces have been carefully dissembled and reassembled as a freestanding work on a constructed concertina frame. My painting now stands by itself within a space and my audience must walk around the work to observe its formal qualities and physicality. I generated intense layering methods to form a sense of dimension, however now the composition has been pulled apart and viewers are forced to move around work to engage carefully with layers of colour, line, and shape. Layers create sense of dimension, further amplified by physical layering
