ARTIST STATEMENT
Change was frequent and in conclusion inevitable. A transient childhood is explored through the interplay between memories and the oceans that are associated with them. Constant relocation is a recurring motif throughout my work, as is the ocean and coastal locations. Perhaps this motif mirrors a consistency that the ocean has had in my life? Whether change was a blessing, or a curse remains unclear. My conclusion is that nostalgia is ultimately neither joy nor pain – it lies in the bittersweet middle ground between where these two emotions exist.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Video footage was captured using a drone and underwater video camera. Vignettes were edited in black an white, slowing transitioning into colour then back to black and white. Short non-diegetic metronome clicks separate scenes. The audio was created using digital instruments and loops in Garage band to create an accompanying soundscape. The video enters and exits on a fade to create a continuous loop.
