Bitter Sweet Memories Installation
My installation, illustrates how although our lives change and memories pass, the vivid memory of certain experiences stay with us.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Childhood memories subconsciously integrate themselves into our everyday lives, as they can form the basis of who we are. Bitter Sweet Memories aims to portray how the reoccurrence of these memories through mundane objects, hold great significance in changing our perception of our present day. My installation, illustrates how although our lives change and memories pass, the vivid memory of certain experiences stay with us. This is portrayed through colour, symbolising how memories cultivate with more vibrancy as time passes. The objects in my work, carry the importance of these memories, inviting the audience to reflect on their own childhood memories.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Tracey Moffatt’s ‘First Jobs’ Series has had a huge influence in my artworks both conceptually and technically. Her juxtaposition of colours to reflect emotions and memories helped me develop deeper meaning within Bitter Sweet Memories. This allowed me to portray people’s memories through everyday mundane objects. Influenced by my love of textile and fashion, and inspired by Claes Oldenburg’s soft sculptures and enlargement of mundane objects I decided to create a photographic series which feature my soft sculptures.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Leilani

Colour and textiles have become my main focus throughout many of my artworks. Fabrics and colour allow me to portray meaning in an abstract manner, as I capture the audiences attention, drawing the viewer in to question the connection colour has within their world whilst fabrics allow me to explore the mundane. My works will in the future will continue to explore and develop memories through more intricate artworks, as I continue to be intrigued on how our memories impact our lives.
