ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork contrasts the contemporary omnipresence of technology with previous, more primitive times, combining the modern media of electrical cables― reference to technology― with the ancient technique of tapestry weaving. The ‘cape’ tapestry metaphorically depicts the ‘shield’ from reality provided by our screens, and the audience’s ability to try it on non-literally conveys the negativity of this lifestyle through the physical weight and discomfort. While the repetitive nature of the woven pattern indirectly depicts our ‘tight-knit’ methodical use of technology, this direct interaction engages the audience further, prompting them to reflect on their own involvement with technology.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Reflecting the contemporary media of artists Chenhung Chen, I have juxtaposed modern social values against past cultures by adapting the ancient technique of tapestry weaving to interlace common computer cords using a large scale, homemade loom. Each wire (rescued from the school I.T department’s e-waste) has been cut to length, woven by hand, and fastened in place using twist ties. I have chosen to engage my audience through the recognisability and confronting scale of the cords, unnatural colours, and thought-provoking ambiguity, as well as the ‘clothing’ aspect of the piece, imitating that works of Fiona Hall.
