ARTIST STATEMENT
The only way I can escape this cage is through my art as I do not need words to communicate. Tagalog, English and Auslan are too much! Deep in the cage is my skull, my mind which hold my thoughts. I feel alone, silent and silenced. Dialogue and sentences are great if you understand and comprehend their meaning. Words, thoughts and anguish seldom leave my lips. My inner self and my skull are deeply woven with all the expectations of life.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Firstly, I soaked wool in a bucket of paper mache paste, weaving it around a skull to form the shape. When dry, I removed the skull. For the cage, I made wire squares, then joined them using pliers. I purposely made the wire cube shape irregular as I feel that life is not perfect at times. The wool is wrapped tightly over the wire, expressing the emotions trapped in the cage as red symbolises anger, loneliness and silence. Finally, I intertwined the wool around the skull suspending it inside the cage to express expectations deeply rooted in the mind.
