Video and sound footage of the first trip my family took to my Nana's country

ARTIST STATEMENT

Captured on Yumba Nunhi, the land of my people, the Jangga people, through my ancestors, Pompey Earl and Emily ‘Earl’ Nicol (Nana). The footage was taken on a significant camping trip with my family. This was our first-time setting foot on the land where our Nana grew up. This experience gave me new knowledge of my Nana’s life as a young Aboriginal woman in the 1920s and helped my family come together and experience a deeper connection to land which are discussed in the film. This work is to share my Nana’s journey interwoven with my own journey of identity.

ARTWORK PROCESS

During the 2022 June holidays my family travelled to my Nana's country. During this time I captured conversations of family talking about Nana and footage of us all being in country for the first time.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mikaylah Parker

My family is very important to me with a loving, supportive and encouraging environment. My family history intrigues and interests me, which inspires me to want to learn more. My family is Australian, with Aboriginal (Jangga, Birri, Juru of the Birri Gubba Nation), Vanuatuan, Scottish and English heritage. I am currently completing year 12 and studying visual arts, film and biology. I enjoy using print-making and time based media in my artmaking processes. I hope to be able to develop my skills and experiences in visual arts and film through further studies and work experiences after school.
