ARTIST STATEMENT

Fashion and fabric intertwine cultures, people and nature. Using three of myself as the subject, invites the audience to be as one and join the circle of unity and connection where a sustainable fashion is harmonious with nature. A real earring attached to the canvas, shows how natural, beautiful minerals like diamonds are changed to a new man-made standard of ‘beauty’. The hand embroidered features encourage the audience to lean in and take notice of the delicate details. This artwork aims to make the audience realise the impact of their purchases and to consider what they could do to live symbiotically with the environment.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I was inspired by transforming the idea from the consequences of fast fashion, to the hopeful future for a sustainable fashion industry. I deconstructed my previous art assessment, which was a series of dresses made of recycled material. I wanted to incorporate these scraps and salvageable pieces into my artwork. After taking reference photos of myself, I started sketching myself as the three subjects. Using oil paints I painted the canvas and attached the fabric using a glue and acrylic mix. Lastly, I attached an earring to the canvas and hand embroidered floral details.
