ARTIST STATEMENT

Death is inevitable. While each person holds unique individualism, death and fearing the unknown connects us. The acceptance of mortality is innately scary to all of humankind. Death introduces curiosity while also provoking a sense of caution and loss. My contemporary sculpture aims to change the perceptions upon mortality and death. Rather than fearing life's end, we should celebrate the time we have been gifted. The black and white contrast in the background and foreground symbolises life and death aspects of mortality. The red heart emphasises the celebratory nature of living and how we are more than merely our physical being.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Initially, I brainstormed possible messages about time, life, and death. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Holly Simpson

For many, art is an expression of oneself, a piece of them that remains timeless, for years after they are gone, but for me it means letting go. Letting go of intangible problems or emotions. Letting go of what I think I know and becoming open in learning new techniques and experiencing new emotions through other artists such as my favorites Tim Burton, Marian Drew, and Keith Haring. I find that fine details truly represent the intricacy of life, and aid in my passion for helping others, by opening them up to new perspectives, emotions, and experiences.
