ARTIST STATEMENT
A post-apocalyptic interpretation where nature is in control, in contrast to the dominance of human infrastructure in today’s society, is the focus of, The Vines Always Regrow. The artworks of Maria Sibylla and Jason deCaires Taylor inspired its contemporary, environmental context. An aluminium ribcage, represents a dystopian society, inspired by the general representation of cyborg futuristic themes, and human skeletal structures. Emotions are a key part of the concept and experience for each viewer. The audience is reminded of the fragility of our human existence. Calling into question the way we treat the environment; contemplating their own impact and future existence of our planet.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Alcohol inks were abstractly poured across a bodice made from clear plastic and then embellished with hand made mosses, vines and leaves which were hand dyed, painted and machine embroidered. Electronic circuit boards are attached to the bodice with contact adhesive and surrounded by moss. The back of the bodice is joined by an aluminium cyborg spine and ribs, riveted together that wrap around the sides of the bodice. Leaves and vines are hand stitched to the bodice and entwine their way down and around the legs to shoes that are adorned with mosses of varying hues.
