ARTIST STATEMENT
My Fragmenting Landscape triptych 2022 speaks about the Earth. It uses motifs and metaphors of metal to talk about the 'red heart', the 'centre', oxidisation and the reclaiming, by the soil, of our industrial waste. Lorraine Connolly-Northey's work was a profound influence on the development of my ideas and led to the concept of Severed Songlines. The textures, patterns and colours of nature are suspended in the spontaneity of the three monoprints inspired by the heart-ful and connected work of Judy Watson. At the same time, this has been a very personal journey for me about the creek on the land where I dwell.
ARTWORK PROCESS
This work is from a larger body of work consisting of sculpture reliefs and a series of 9 monoprints. The inspiration initially came from studying ideas about the ’Anthropocene’. I was drawn to the concept of ephemerality after discovering John Wolseley's processes in Year 10. While exploring the wetlands for our Authentic Experience, an idea formed as I witnessed the invasion of fences and looming cranes in a World Heritage area. Experimentation led me to play with metal/rust as a symbol of industrialisation, leading to the refinement of symbolic colour and grid/contour lines to express my ideas.
