ARTIST STATEMENT
Shuffling my Playlist, communicates my interpretation of my favourite musicians and songs. I used the form of playing cards to allow audience interaction, individualised meaning making and play. Playing cards are a staple form of entertainment in Europe; I grew up with them. Playing cards also have visual codes, which I have manipulated to express themes embedded within the songs. The houses are symbols for my four favourite musicians.Three songs from each artist appear in the face cards. The back of the cards features a lino print inspired by Alphonse Mucha’s “Zodiac” (1896) and Spotify codes for each song.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Inspired by “Edition Zero by Playing Arts (2012), I drew individual designs for the face cards and symbols for the houses. I used mixed media, including acrylic paint, watercolour and art liner. The back design is created using lino printing and includes a Spotify code.
