ARTIST STATEMENT
"The Things You Remember" is a triptych exploring the way words and conversations affect people as they grow older. I have found that many youths clearly remember moving or hurtful things that adults tell tem. This breeds a variety of resulting emotions and pain - the distrust of a parent, resentment of an authority figure, or a flurry of self-loathing. For this series, I surveyed a number of people anonymously asking the question: "Is there anything an adult has said to you that you still remember to this day?"
ARTWORK PROCESS
Visually childish elements are used in conjuction with the dark subject matter to evoke a feeling of childish rage. The use of realistic eyes as a motif contrasts against the saturated and cartoonish background. I transformed such childish symbols and elements with realism, challenging contemporary notions of art.
