Here Installation
Naïve human form constructed of sewn cloth connected to surrounding environment with strings

ARTIST STATEMENT

'Here' depicts the evolved focus of ‘inhabitance’ by expressing how we inhabit domestic spaces with complex connections represented in this installation by silver strings, spiritually symbolic of consciousness. An alternate approach is taken by recontextualising traditional, ancient techniques in non-traditional ways to create new forms and spaces, as well as the contemporary theme of domestic isolation and connection. We consider social and personal context, considering the collective human condition as understood through my personal experience and eliciting a visceral response as audiences relate on an individual level to the uniting form of the human body while also physically interacting with the interacting with the installation.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Shabby stitching and construction with domestic materials gives an unsophisticated impression, paying homage to the naïve art movement where formal knowledge and skill is rejected in favour of producing a raw perspective of the human condition (Briceño V, 2019). The amateur stitching also references the spontaneous nature of Chiharu Shiota’s thread work (Mun-Delsalle, 2021).
