ARTIST STATEMENT

Reality implies 'things as they are', however, my reality is crafted on a foundational idea that thoughts of ‘what is real’, are akin to vapour in the atmosphere or become twisted hybrids of ordinary things that echo a Surrealist aesthetic. The focus of Tree Cloud Rock 2022 is the stuff of imagination (and reality), it capitalises on the idea that within each of us is a unique perception of the world. The transparent surface on which I paint is representative of how a memory or a thought can be evoked in any place or time. I wanted to share my ‘reality’ with you.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The work is part of a series of amorphous images painted onto glass or acrylic. I began the work determined to find a way to show how my imagination works; what my 'reality' looks like. Painting on a clear panel allowed me to transport the images I made to various environments and then use photography to 'solidify' the vision.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jemma Jansen van Vuuren

I like fantasy. So often, for inspiration I turn to the imaginary. Im also very interested in physics, particularly the theoretical aspects. Honestly, i just enjoy making anything, inspiration comes from anywhere for me, from a book I’m reading, or from a song. If you have the chance to study art, do it. Even if you think your artistic ability isn’t up to it, that’s not the point. Studying art is like studying philosophy through images, its so much more than just drawing or painting.
