ARTIST STATEMENT
The Worthy series is a personal representation of the expectations of beauty the world had on women over the last 100 years. With each decade new definitions were created to trap a woman’s beauty in a box, by doing so humankind has created a beauty standard trying to make women fit one specific mold. These 6 figures represent the women who were called unworthy and ugly, who were forced to change their natural bodies in order for them to be seen as beautiful. “I am “I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” Psalms 139:14
ARTWORK PROCESS
Worthy is a series of 6 female figures created from clay and acrylic paints. The creation of the piece began with a flat piece of clay spread out on a mannequin mould, each then being hand sculpted to create the unique 3D shapes of each form. In order to express the idea of time passing throughout the series inspiration was taken from the fashion patterns and art styles of the 1920s, 40s, 60s, 80s, 2000s and finally the 2020s. To complete the forms the patterns were hand-painted, each form corresponding with its inspired decade.
