ARTIST STATEMENT

Although many are aware of suicide, many individuals are unaware of how to really speak about the topic; In particular, what is left unsaid. Often, young cases feature light-hearted terminology, forcing the conversations to be limited and uneducated. Witnessing blame and disrespect towards many adolescents experiencing suicidal thoughts and attempts, the stigma proves impossible to reduce without direct confrontation. The use of confronting imagery such as pills, tape, and a noose challenges audiences and manipulates the surface conversations regarding the topic of teen suicide. The painting demonstrates the dire need to alter the hesitant stigma surrounding teen suicide.

ARTWORK PROCESS

With reference to Melanie Pullen’s depictions of taboo within society, the subtle yet alarming imagery reinforces the requirement of deeper discussion. Techniques such as dry brushing and quick strokes create a sketchy and incomplete style. Contrasted to direct focus, the symbols and eyes are far more detailed, creating a link to audience through realism. Furthermore, wet on wet blending was used to achieve smoother transitions between colours.
