ARTIST STATEMENT
In contemporary and personal contexts my body of work explores an alternate approach to artmaking. Composure
investigates the concept of performance anxiety. I work against traditional practises, exploiting materials as a form of expression to represent the build of the musician’s emotions. I investigate past experiences that have become a part of my identity and how these traits affected my performances. By utilising space and form, Composure, has been created to generate an emotional response from the audience. Music sheets printed on raw calico, crumpled, stained and thrown away to represent anger, burnout, and never ending effort to to perfect a piece of music.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Sheet music was printed on individual pieces of crushed calico. Scale and form were explored to represent significant discarding of sheet music. Pieces of a violin sit around the main form. Pieces are suspended from above the main form. The audience is encouraged to walk around the sculpture, taking their time to engage with the artwork.
