ARTIST STATEMENT
Inspired by collage/assemblage artist Lance Letscher my artwork is from a personal context, an evolved representation of my experience during the immersive trip at the Capricorn Caves. The resolved artwork challenged me with all its aspects as I had never deeply experimented with collage, mosaic or installation style art, pushing me out of my comfort zone of my usual acrylic painting. The installation draws viewers into the mentality I experienced, displaying the mentality that we all go through at some point. The artwork expresses the feeling of everyone’s eyes burning into you even though you know rationally they aren’t even looking at you.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Your Eyes on Me is a 6-piece artwork comprised of mirror on one side of plywood and collage of cookbook images on the other side suspended from fishing wire at head height. Pieces of mirror were smashed and assembled on the wood in a mosaic fashion, the pupil and sclera section as normal mosaic placement and the iris section with long thin pieces all directed towards the pupil to allow the viewer to identify the eye shape out of the mirror. The colour for each iris on the collage side was to illustrate each person in my class’s eyes.
