ARTIST STATEMENT

As a young Indigenous artist, it is my responsibility to not only to contribute to, but also challenge, encourage and positively change the perception of Indigenous culture. In 2022, I feel there is a higher stake towards continuing the symbols, traditions and languages within Indigenous culture. It is up to the younger generations to keep alive and run the relay of heritage, culture and tradition. Strong parental figures have instilled the courage in me to promote my culture through art and dance. In reflection, looking back is not an alternative view, but a foundation for the future- and is just as important as looking forward.

ARTWORK PROCESS

At the start of the creation phase I had to understand how my pieces have a story, taking lead from inspirational artists I manipulated the techniques of past and present, where I am carrying stories and experiences that need to survive through generations to come. Anatjari Tjakamarra uses the Central Australian technique of art which shows he’s appreciation of culture, and past memories combining a personal and cultural contexts. As a contemporary artist, my artworks embody the present formally, but materialistically connect with the past.
