ARTIST STATEMENT

I’ve always been an observer, sitting quietly at family functions, by myself at school, never knowing the right time to speak. I’ve struggled to put words to how I feel. By connecting with earth, fire, wind and water, I’m grounded with all existence. I feel myself evolving from who I used to be, to who I am now. Approaching the canvas from a new me, a new perspective, using my intuition to identify how I feel, through this, finding beauty in a dark place. Someone once told me, you are someone special if you can find peace in a moment of chaos.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I experimented with self portraits, to convey a positive sense of self, manipulating colour and mixed media materials. This led to manipulating pictures of myself into paintings with a focus on textural elements to create movement through the piece. In these works I have experimented with mark-making, cross-hatching and stippling were used to amplify highlights and shadows to create an uneven contrast, so that each figure is defined. The use of colour links the works with each of the elements - fire, air, earth and water.
