Veronica Sanders
'Swirling and Spinning into Me' Painting
Portrait painting Acrylic paint on canvas Personal and cultural context

ARTIST STATEMENT

Swirling shapes and colour, bunching, vibrant flowers surrounding my own figure dressed in my cultural clothing. A visual depiction of the overwhelming amount of conflicting feelings both positive and negative, that come with trying to present and align myself with the culture and background of me and my family. Even dressed in traditional Indonesian clothing, the figure (me) is surrounded with swirling and spinning emotions. Batik is beautiful but it feels foreign on me, contrasting too much with what I feel.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Personal research led to exploration of a cultural narrative through a personal lens. The portrait evolve from a serious of drawing, reflective processes and experimental exercises in the use of paint, the composition [triptych] and the colour palette.
