Invisible String Installation
Sculptures of everyday objects papier mâchéd with fine parchment. Lights and string connect the various objects.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Invisible String is inspired by the age-old lore that the gods connected humans to each other by an invisible red thread, leading them to a significant person in their life. Life and memories are fragile and fleeting, shaped by thousands of people whether they know it or not - they colour our memories. Expanding on the works of Kiki Smith, my sculptures are connected by light and red thread; delicate, riddled with creases and blotches of memories. Sometimes real beauty and meaning are found in imperfection - it's what tells an innately human story and reveals how our universal, yet intricate experiences unite us.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Personal photos, diary entries and letters were initially printed onto fine parchment paper. This was papier mâchéd to create the forms of everyday personal objects like a radio, book and jewellery box. The resulting forms are assembled on a flat desk-like surface (plinth) and shelf positioned on the wall. Battery operated lights and red string connect and unify the parts.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Cara Orendain

I think it's incredible how interconnected we are through our thoughts, actions, and shared experiences. The unpredictability and fleeting nature of life has always fascinated me - nobody ever knows who they're going to meet, or how much a person can change their life whether it be a loved one, or a stranger. In my creative journey, I have found a love for sharing such universal stories on the human condition through art and literature, and I hope to continue doing so after school.
