Seeing Double Painting
A portrait triptych of my father and mother and myself

ARTIST STATEMENT

This series of paintings reflect the often-overlooked connection between the past and the present. From the naked eye, the paintings are not distinguishable. However, when looking through each lens of the 3D glasses, two different images can be viewed. This technique was inspired by street artist Stathis Tsavalias, who creates innovative 3D anaglyph murals using colour theory and overlaying two pictures. I invite the audience to reflect on how they personally have both physically and mentally changed over the course of their life, the similarities and differences, and not to forget how their journey began.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Firstly took a series of photographs of my father, mother and of myself. Experimented with the process of anaglyph 3D art, this refers to the 3D effect achieved by encoding the eyes with two different images chromatically opposite, using red and cyan. While wearing 3D glasses and looking through each colour separately, I created two different images that are overlapped. It was difficult working out the right degree of colour to achieve the desired effect. When viewed from the front the images appear double; but when viewed using 3D glasses the images separate creating two images.
