ARTIST STATEMENT
Our world can be divided into two categories – the material, or that which you see and hold; and the immaterial, or that which you feel and know. Materials vs Memories captures memories and materials in a way that gives space to value each. Walking between each atmosphere, I encourage you to reflect upon what’s most important to you. As human’s, we’re all on a clock with an unpredictable set time here on Earth… so, in the midst of all this impermanence, which do you surrender your value to? The materials? Or the memories?
ARTWORK PROCESS
I used iMovie, Photoshop and editing apps to filter and distort images and photographs to achieve a consistent aesthetic with the mood I wanted to achieve. I kept the Memories colourful, bright and layered, while giving Materials the black background and a simpler / less complex structure. Materialism is based on mass production & consumerism; its repetitive, common, familiar, and impersonalised. I made sure that the sequencing was a reflection of that. The immaterial side juxtaposed this, as memories and experiences are quite the opposite: irreplaceable, unique, authentic, singular. As such, the Memories final projection has no repeated sequences.
