You. Me. We. Installation
A large-scale hanging installation, forming a grid of 9 sections with three layers (24 sheets of Perspex in total).

ARTIST STATEMENT

Despite there still being prejudice and inequality all over the world, people find it hard to believe that the fight for equality between men and women is still not over. It is not until someone sees how it relates to them that they can understand why it is their fight too. You. Me. We. is a hanging installation depicting famous feminists throughout the history of the women’s movement. The centre of the artwork is left empty to encourage the audience to step behind the sheets and view themselves as part of the ‘movement’, and therefore part of the change.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I looked at Christian Thompson and his use of cultural context and perspective – he placed himself in the artwork, something I was interested in doing. I considered how the audience would interact with the work and whether they could see themselves as part of the artwork. I looked at the events of the women’s movement but decided to focus on singular people as that is more recognisable by the audience. I chose to depict past and present famous men and women as it is everyone’s issue. I was interested in using uncommon materials (Perspex) and familiar techniques (photography).
