ARTIST STATEMENT
“Darkness vs Light” is an artwork which looks at things in a new light – darkness. Ornate chandeliers are the focal point. Soft lighting and crystals, layered an all-black background creating a sense of intrigue. The contrast of the black with the delicate gold arouses curiosity. Darkness symbolises mystery and magic. ‘Vantablack’; the blackest black has been utilised for the objects beneath. What does the book represent? What is inside? What does it hide? The beauty of black allows for individual interpretation… the answer is hidden in the darkness.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Through exploring key artists – Anish Kapoor, Kathy Temin and Chiharu Shiota, who focus on exploring darkness, blackness and mystery and by looking at things in a different light, the message being communicated, shows how darkness represents intrigue and mystery. Painting on photo paper rather than a canvas, left me with a matte texture, looking more like Vantablack. The use of slightly raised foam core makes elements stand out much more and the details drawn with posca paint pens leaves the perfect effect. Along with the lace curtain spray paint backdrop and objects seen below, my piece came to life.
