'Inevitable Consequences' Oil painting plus sculpture
Oil painting on canvas with 3D coral reef/shark's teeth sculptures. Image change according to blue/white light on a timer.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Does our interconnection with the environment put us at risk? The deeply intertwined demeanour of life-forms means we rely on all elements of the food chain for survival. ‘Inevitable Consequences’ explores the interrelationship between lifeforms, and the GBR marine ecosystem’s deterioration in the absence of sharks. The woman portrayed poses a metaphor for sharks and ecosystemic vulnerability. Her naked, wounded disposition expresses suffering and fragility, emphasising how our abuse of sharks impacts the entire ecosystem, and the consequences we will suffer as part of that ecosystem. I hope to hold accountability for our actions, provoking a deeper respect for nature.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The main painting was rendered with oil paints, then a blue light sensitive paint was used to paint the shark and various parts of the coral and sand. The image changes according to the light shone on it.
