ARTIST STATEMENT

You are a story. Your face is your identity. Your life evokes your journey. The exploration of self is my life. A jumble of how I see myself, through my culture and surroundings. Home as Self explores ones forever home which isn’t necessarily a house. The walls of a home are like the arms of a family member. Once surrounded by the hanging fabric, the similar feeling of love, safety and security flushes through your body like the feeling of home. Your home can come and go but your family can never leave your side.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Home as Self was developed to show my story. It was created from migrated Calico fabric and raw charcoal to highlight my significant moments in my life, yet to be complete. I completed a portrait of myself as a baby and my current self, using Vernon Ah Kee’s cross sketching skills. I also included significant landmarks (Uluru from Australia and Rangitoto from New Zealand) to incorporate where I have come from and where I live presently. The inclusion of Maori and Indigenous Aboriginal symbols has meaning behind each component. The hanging swirl symbolises the walls of a home.
