ARTIST STATEMENT

Experiencing modern day society takes a toll on us both mentally and physically. We struggle through the everyday, dealing with pressures from a range of factors. As a teenager in current society, these pressures shape how I and others perceive me, and therefore how I experience life. There are two layers that are affected – the mental and the physical, which mask our true selves deteriorating over time. My inner self translates internalised thoughts of how I see myself and how other’s thoughts can change our own perceptions. These words are reiterated by my voice, narrating thoughts and emotions.

ARTWORK PROCESS

My artwork was painted on a wide paper. The base was roller painted creating the first layer of texture before flicking paint to create a new layer. From there, I used more acrylic paint, shaping the base of each figure I wanted and layer by layer started to slowly paint details, using paint pens and refined marker pens to create texture. The creation of the work consisted of pulling paint off the surface, scratching the paint off, rubbing and blending ink and layering paint to help create different types of texture.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kolbe Echentille

I enjoy the fun behind being creative and being able to do whatever you want, the only restriction being your mind. Most of my inspiration comes from cartoons, the different styles, the amount of detail in artworks and the different colours people use. Listening to music is something else that gives me ideas or influences what I create or even just as something to keep me awake when I’m getting tired. I enjoy creating, there’s always so much going on in in our heads and visual art allows me to personally express whatever I am thinking.
