ARTIST STATEMENT

“Flowers” lies within the uncomfortable part of the uncanny valley. Audience engagement is prevalent when their decision to either make and place a flower or take one manipulating how much of the sculpture is uncovered. Created within the personal and contemporary contexts, “Flowers” challenges the viewer’s own fear of death, the ever-changing sculpture will eventually unveil a shocking corpse. “Flowers” challenges the viewer’s experiences of bereavement and loss. “Flowers” experiments with the audience’s willingness to sacrifice their mental state forcing the consideration of their emotions. “Flowers” took inspiration in my persistent thoughts on how I would cope losing a loved one.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Multiple origami flowers were folded. Then wire was manipulated to form a cat like skeleton. Faux fur was sewn on and around the skeleton leaving gaps for bones. Bones were placed within the fake cat extruding outwards. Fake blood was then sprayed onto the sculpture and the flowers were placed onto the art piece after drying. Origami paper was on display with the instructions for folding the flower using the origami paper as an example.
