Metamorphosis Jewellery
Inspired by the structure of butterfly scales, this asymmetrical neckpiece is made from hand, laser cut and texturised aluminium wire.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Influenced by Paradisus terrestris (1990) by Fiona Hall, this neckpiece was created to emphasise the intricate texture of aluminium scales that wrap around the form. Observations of forms and textures at a macro scale allowed me to explore these formal elements on the surface of the metal scales. The artwork exemplifies the meaning of butterflies both literally and metaphorically; reflect the butterflies' cyclical life cycle while alluding to their symbolic meaning as an omen. Metamorphosis (2022) is designed to be worn, allowing the artwork to move and refract light from a myriad of angles, but also to be displayed just as effectively when stationary.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Aluminium neckpiece constructed from multiple hand-cut and textured scales that transform into laser cut scales on its opposing side. After scoring, cutting and drilling the individual scales were textured using punches and shaped by hand. The scales were then folded and threaded onto aluminium wire. Two wires entwined at the back of the neck to emulate tendrils reminiscent of butterfly antennae. These were hand finished at the ends with a planishing hammer until they became work hardened. Laser cutting sped up the production and created an interesting contrast between opposite sides of the neckpiece.
