ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork 'Creatures Unknown' showcases the limits of the human form, using gesture and exaggeration, through a contemporary context. The works showcase the human form in unnatural ways and focuses on potential adaptations and extremes of the human form, paring evolutionary possibilities with unreal exaggerations. This work uses abstract, bold colours and patterns to distort and stretch the human body with gesture. It utilises repetition, overlaying imagery to intrigue and captive the audience, communicating beauty and awe in the extremes of the human body. 'Creatures Unknown' shock and entertain the audience, illustrating the limit of the human form.
ARTWORK PROCESS
'Creatures Unknown' was largely impacted by my research of Christina Quarles and Marc Quinn’s works. Like Quarles’ works and my experiments, this series of photographs utilised strong lighting, a two dimensional medium, overlayed and semi transparent elements, and abstracted body parts. Quinn’s work can be seem in the use of multiple limbs within two of the three of these photographs, which work with the modern, digital medium and other abstracted and magnified elements of these designs to create an alternate, contemporary context. This series aims to communicate the strangeness of the human body, and fascination of its evolution.
