ARTIST STATEMENT
'Family Ties' (2022) explores the connection between history and culture in the construction of my own identity. Inspired by
Zhang Xiaogang and John Clang’s photography techniques and emphasis on the importance of family in the construction of
personal identity, has led me to my resolved series. Through a personal context, the artwork expresses my process of self discovery
as it conveys my family, culture, and history. This was depicted through a series of human portraits, as individual
histories, combining to construct a unified display. The compelling images are accompanied with the structured lines of embroidery to interrupt the stark pose and emphasise each sitter.
ARTWORK PROCESS
When constructing my resolved artwork my artist development became a process of experimentation as the techniques used were none I have encountered before. When developing my design ideas, I discovered that Ah Xian’s context, Zhang Xiaogang’s concept of family, John Clang's photography techniques, Sephora Venites photographic manipulation and Annegret Soltau’s use of embroidery were the ideal techniques I used in my resolved design to accurately convey my focus. During the creative processes, I utilised Clang’s media of photography to express individual portraits of my family members. I then applied Soltau’s structured
embroidery.
