ARTIST STATEMENT
I have lived with anxiety my whole life. My work is my own personal experience with anxiety and how I experience that constant feeling of anxiousness. ‘Why Apologize When You Turn Blue and Cold?’ explores my personal conflict of mood, as well as how others percieve me. This piece shows an intense version of this feeling. Self-Portraits aren’t something I was familiar with. I struggled with self depiction and facial observation. This drawing is for me.
ARTWORK PROCESS
My experimental works have been created through my own personal experiences with anxiety while at the Queensland Gallery of Art. The constant feeling of anxiousness influenced all of my artworks. ‘So Why Apologize When You Turn Blue and Cold?’ shows a more intense version of this feeling. I have used Crawford’s sense of intimacy within this work- that true sense of the battle with oneself. Self-Portraits aren’t something I’m familiar with, so I certainly struggled with that aspect of this piece. Having to really understand what I look like and to communicate it.
