ARTIST STATEMENT
01110111 is a framed paper sculpture that explores the impacts of pop-culture and contemporary media on identity. Media has power
over society, influencing our lives and binding individuals together through networks of trending media. My artwork visually personifies societies’ consumption of media. Symbols of religious poses, alternative fashion, and the mindless eyes of a fly take a significant place within my artwork. We worship social media as a god. We are the mindless fly to the power of contemporary media and pop culture. Our identity is not ours to contstruct.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I wanted my artwork to have an abstracted focus on identity, concentrating on a specific influencer of identity; popular media. I started by questioning how I would symbolise both media and identity visually. That’s when I got the idea of a fly. Mindless consumers, which somewhat reminded me of humans. Then, I added other symbols and mediums. In the end, my artwork was a combination of symbols, layered paper, and light.
