It's Our Choice Installation
A film of nature scenes that fade into each other and an artist book that sits on a plinth.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Discussions revolving around humans' actions towards our planet often lead to despondency regarding our wildlife's future. "It's Our Choice" challenges ideas surrounding climate change. A utopian environment for our wildlife, viewed from an alternate, hopeful perspective. A vibrant, abstract interpretation of the colours of frogs, dolphins, bees and hummingbirds, light shining through the perforations to cast an illumination of each animal. The star shape alludes to the hope our animals have if we look after them. The chain symbolizes the links between animals in an ecosystem, and references the imprisonment these animals face. “How are my actions impacting our environment?”

ARTWORK PROCESS

Taken photos and video of various places within nature. Has created an artist book using photographs of nature and has pricked holes in each feature of the pages for the audience to shine light through. Accompanying movie of images.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sophie Breckenridge

I have always appreciated nature. I discovered an interest in photography whilst capturing moments in nature that we don’t often stop to observe. As I grew up, I became aware of the detrimental effects humans have on the environment. I have expressed environmental messages in my artworks to create more awareness about the impact humans have on the environment. My artworks aim to increase the viewers appreciation of nature, to facilitate a sense of gratitude and to encourage connectivity with the earth. I aim to encourage a sense of responsibility in taking action to protect our environment.
