Portrait of Chaos mixed media
A portrait of the students cat using a combination of abstract and representational symbols using mixed media.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I painted my cat, Loki. In symbolism, the swirls and spirals to represent the never-ending cycle of routine and the burnout that follows with them, taking up a large portion of the canvas. The cuts and slices in the canvas signify both the scratches (curtesy of Loki himself) and the mental scars left from the past and the thread symbolises how my animal companion keeps me together with the comfort of my fluffy friend. Although cats don’t speak, they give off somewhat of a calming effect just knowing that you have that bond whilst being reliant on each other.

ARTWORK PROCESS

“Portrait of Chaos”, in this work I have used acrylic paint, thread, and pencil to create the unsettling aura of this piece. In fact, the cuts in the canvas are very much real and so is the thread. I used gold paint for lighting and mixed colours as dark as I could, dry-brushing the canvas to create a furry texture. The spirals were referenced from a book, “UZUMAKI” by Junji Ito – my favourite artist and writer. These were done with a thin, wet brush to create the appearance of a smooth, yet sketchy visual.
