Future Fields Painting
A large-scale acrylic painting on a custom curved wooden canvas.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Future Fields immerses the audience within the artwork by creating the illusion of standing within a field itself. The intention of this artwork is to communicate the shared experience between young women as they make important choices that impact their future. The field of flowers explores the constructs of time and represents the endless decisions we make as we grow and how identifying the correct choices can be difficult. The female figure can be seen standing alone without direction, inferring that life’s journey can be both terrifying and beautiful and the path we choose for ourselves can dictate this future.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I experimented with technologies including light projection in order to enhance the illusions of my artwork, but this resulted in the discolouration of the acrylic paint and removed the authenticity and beauty created by hand painting. Through experimenting with symbols and colour working collectively, this created reflection on how visuals can translate into emotions. I manipulated traditional materials and techniques to employ an alternative representation of the future, and the influence of choice. Through inspiration of Vincent Van Gogh’s personal art aesthetic, I attempted to convey intense contemporary themes that were translated through painting techniques and visual illusions.
