ARTIST STATEMENT

Ew! Nappies on the beach are disgusting! The plastic from nappies gets swallowed by turtles, clogs their gut and kills them. Mother have so much stuff to do. All the rubbish comes their way and they have to deal with it from the time a child is born. There is rubbish on the beach and rubbish loading down our mums. We need to clean up the beach and we need to clean up how babies are raised -so that turtles and mothers survive.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I drew a lot of women busts. I made the clay work slowly as the clay was a bit wet to hold the work up. I put a cylinder in the middle and built a receptacle shape around it. I smoothed the bust out in great detail and glazed with beautiful patterns of flowers and leaves. I found a nappy, created baby excrement out of dirt and arranged it the display.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Maggie McLean

I have a duel existence. One in the country, Bungundarra on 27 acres of bush, including 72 avocado trees, 4 cows, 2 dogs and a manky dam. The other is in town in Yeppoon near the beach in a busy seven people household. Family dinners are huge. Art is easy – it is my solace and my salvation.
