ARTIST STATEMENT
The visual manipulation and duplication of a fading Claddagh ring invite the audience to consider how the connection to culture fades when duplicated throughout generations. The work explores the formal and cultural context by simplifying the lines and shapes of the traditional Claddagh ring to draw attention to the symbols embedded in the traditional ring.
A recent visit from my Irish Grandad made this cultural loss very real. We struggled through laughter to communicate and be understood. This interaction encouraged me to reflect on my own understanding, appreciation, and value of my vibrant culture and the need to participate in keeping culture alive.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Developed from exploring ways to communicate meaning around the loss of culture, I began to experiment using the formal elements of line, shape and tone first sketching then photocopying to reduce, enlarge and finally change the density of them drawn image. Seeking feedback on the use on the use of colour in the original design highlighted varied viewpoints and understanding of the symbols and codes used in art. I used this information to make decisions to reduce and simplify both my design and the colour palet.
