ARTIST STATEMENT

Living in a rural area, I am isolated from accessing actual artworks. My only way of viewing artworks is through a device. This can alter my perception of the actual artworks. By accessing artworks digitally, I was able to explore the process of Jenny Saville and Tracey Emin. I developed a process I can apply in my painting practice without needing to know what the end result will look like. My installation suggests the relationship between how I access art in a rural area and 'real' artworks to remind my audience that we live in a textual universe.

ARTWORK PROCESS

All focus artworks that inspired Carli's practice were accessed digitally via online platforms; for regional art students, this is how they primarily access artworks. After formal experimentation prompted by the practices of other artists (Saville, Emin), Carli produced two large portraits, working from an abstract field toward the figurative portrait elements. For installation, the portrait paintings were hung and an artist's easel with an iPad was placed in front of the paintings, obscuring the audience's view. The iPad has an image of the portrait paintings, suggesting how Carli accesses artworks from a rural location. The installation prompts Carli's conceptual questions.
