The Death of Mother Nature Video
Stop-motion video that explores the destruction of Mother Nature.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The artwork comments on the state of our neglect of nature, particularly littering. The context is contemporary, as pollution is an issue only worsening in modern times. Influences include litter pollution, as well as artists Valerie Hegarty (for her use of realistic destruction to convey an environmental message) and Hendrik Kerstens (for his combination of litter and portraiture, discussing litter pollution). The artwork is a video with audio, so the audience will experience it like a short film.

ARTWORK PROCESS

This artwork is a stop-motion video, created from a series of photos where “mother nature”, originally covered in leaves, gets progressively more covered in litter. The use of a female subject symbolises the earth as “mother nature”. Audio gets more distorted as the video progresses, representing “decay” of nature. Random flashes represent loss of nature. A single leaf remains at the end of the video, symbolising “Earth’s tears”.
