ARTIST STATEMENT

This artwork focuses on the beauty that can result after trauma. The emotive surface symbolises feelings of the body; warmth/growth, cold/pain. It is literally cut through, the trauma experienced on the ‘body’, creating angular shapes that emphasize aggressive characteristics of trauma, these then rebuilt/reconnected through layering and placement into the new and beautiful. This rebuilding embodies paradoxical qualities, fragility and durability and strength and delicacy. My body, physically involved, spread and smeared the paint across the surface. The audience first seduced by the beauty, then the raw application of paint and cutout shapes engage to emotionally connect with real experience.
